Hedonisia and Hawaii: Living with an active volcano
The area we live in has the world's longest active flowing volcano. It is 30 minutes drive away. If you are lucky when you visit the volcano you will be treated to an amazing spectacle of Mother Nature. A side of a mountain on fire and slowly oozing into the ocean. Fire and water in a neverending clash of steam!
One of the strange benefits of living under an active volcano is that nobody can build a 5-star hotel here! The kind of massive development that has ruined much of Hawaii's natural beauty is not feasible because there is always the possiblitity that the Hawaiian Goddess of the Volcano Pele,
can change her flow and simply cover it with lava!
As a result there is an abundance of alternative communities; living under Pele! Protected by the volcano but with always the possibility that all that we've built can be taken away. Our property is definitely a buddhist exercise in caring about and building an amazing community with the full knowledge that the lava can easily cover it.
We are classified as Lava Zone 1 which means that we have the highest likelihood of being graced by Mother Pele's volcanic lava flow if she decides to change her path.
So we enjoy Hedonisia while we can!
