Name of Plant: Basil Country of Origin: It was brought to England by the Crusaders, having been common in the eastern Mediterranean. Uses: Basil can be used in cooking, generally added at the end to keep its fresh taste and color. Basil can also be used fresh in salads, on sandwiches or even as a wrap, for instance around cheese cubes. Growing Tips: Ensure soil is well dug over and weed free. Its main requirements are sun and heat. Start basil seed indoors six weeks before the last frost date and don't transplant or set out until the ground is thoroughly warm. Basil won't tolerate cold! Harvest Time: Consider pruning a means for continual harvest. By pruning your basil often, the plant will stay healthy and robust and will produce many harvests throughout the season.
