Additional Information: Originally introduced and cultivated as an ornamental plant, Miconia can reach heights of 50 feet, producing dense shade which smothers native forests. The plant also invades open pastures and farmlands unless quickly removed from the area. Miconia is an aggressive invader. On Hawai'i Island, Miconia currently infests over 25,000 acres. The core infestation of Miconia is located along the scenic Hamakua Coast. From this location, the aggressive plant has been spread far and wide by birds and by people.
