HOSTEL SPACES, BARN, KITCHEN & BATHROOM The first priority is to do any of the chores below that are needed. For example, if the barn needs sweeping then that must be done first. Otherwise you can choose any combination of chores that you would like to do for each Daily Shift. A. The Barn (Clean as needed) Average time to complete 1. Vacuum and sweep inside the barn. 30 min 2. Clear personal items from Communal Areas. 10 min 3. Organize and clean TV and computer zone. 15 min 4. Dust and wipe countertop of Computer/TV area. 5 min 5. Organize stationary materials- pens, pencils, scrap paper. 10 min 6. Dust computer monitor, motherboard, and keyboard. 5 min 7. Clean floor underneath computer shelf. 15 min 8. Organize 3 storage compartments above the Computer/TV. First shelf- Organize DVDs. Second shelf - Organize games, maps, and brochures. Third shelf- Organize sheets, quilts 20 min 9. Back of the Barn – (Smoking Area) Clear out all cigarette butts, take any chairs back inside. General tidying of this area. 10 min TOTAL Time if all Jobs need to be completed 2 hrs B. The Kitchen: (Clean as needed) Average time to complete task 1. Wash dishes and put them on shelves. After Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Especially important to do a last cleanup before bed-time so that we don’t get cockroaches and mice. Wipe down sink area. 20 min; 3 times a day 2. Clean up plant area behind kitchen sink. Pick up fallen dishes and clean drainage strainer. 5 min 3. Clean shelves and stove in kitchen area. 15 min 4. Basic clean and wipe down of refrigerator interior. 10 min 5. Wipe down all appliances; coffeemaker, hot plate, stove, microwave, and toaster oven. 10 min once a day 6. Take out garbage. Empty small garbage cans in kitchen and large garbage. Put bags in the back by the Laundry Dryer Zone. 10 min twice a day 7. Clean off dining room table and dust off tablemats. 10 min 8. Sweep kitchen and dining room area. 15 min 9. Take out Food Compost. Clean Compost bucket. 20 min TOTAL Time if all Jobs need to be Completed 2 hrs 30 min C. ECO-TOILET, SHOWER AREA, RECYCLING ZONE, LAUNDRY AREAS & YARD AROUND BARN (Clean as needed) Average time to complete Task 1. Check Supplies: Fourth shelf above computer area has assorted Eco supplies needed for Hedonisia Hawaii. Toilet paper, laundry soap, dish soap, sponges, propane gas. Check Supplies and Refill as needed 10 min 2. Shower Area: Put non-used shampoos and conditioners in the Communal box. General cleaning of shower. Scrub floor of shower if floor looks green or is slippery. 15 min 3. Eco-Toilet Area – Clean Toilet bowl with proper brush. Sweep Toilet platform. Bring new toilet paper rolls if needed. 15 min 4. Walk Around Property – Pick up any scraps or garbage. Property should look clean and natural with no plastic, paper, metal or other scrap lying around on the property grounds. Especially around the Barn and Dryer Area! Clean lint from Dryer. 15 min 5. Organize all Recycling. There are 7 categories of Recycling. Make sure all cans and bottles are in the appropriate boxes. Especially the Hi-5 plastic, glass and cans as we get 5 cents per item. 15 min TOTAL Time if all Jobs need to be Completed 1 hr 10 min D. Clean Hostel Bed Spaces: (Clean as Needed) BT1 = BarnTent #1 (Single) BT2 = Barn Tent #2 (Single) AV = Avocado (Double) OV = Ocean View (Double) SS = Sunny Side (Single) BH =Bamboo Hut(Double) JLB = Jungle Love Bus (Double) JB = Jungle Breeze (Double) GV= Guava Tent (Single) And finally, as a special project: JC = Jungle Cottage. Sweep and/or vacuum inside of tent or living space. If the day is sunny then take out the small brown tarp from Sunnyside and put the mattress on it so it can be aired out in the sunshine. Clean underneath Mattress area. Dust mattress and turn over if necessary. Change bedding. Place clean fitted or flat sheet on mattress and clean pillowcase. Quilts only need to be changed or washed if they look dirty or smell. Otherwise it is simply uneconomical as well as not very eco-friendly for us to wash a quilt every time. Fold flat sheet and quilt at head of bed. Wipe and clean bed head and empty dustbins. Distribute 1-2 quilts per bed space. One pillow for Single Spaces and 2 pillows for Doubles. Average Time to do clean up for a space is 30 minutes except the Jungle Love Bus which takes 2.5 hours or one complete shift. Tent spaces in the Barn are a little less at 20 minutes and in the other outer spaces it is a little more so this is the average. Please talk to us if you see any special projects you want to do in a particular Bed Space. The Jungle Cottage is a 1-Bedroom house so cleaning that takes 1-2 Volunteer shifts. We are a small Eco-Hostel Community so ALL Hedonisia Volunteers have to participate in Kitchen/Barn/Toilet/Shower Cleanup for at least one day a week. When there are 5 or more Volunteers on the property each Volunteer is assigned at least one Cleaning Day. When there are less than 5 Volunteers then each Volunteer does 1 hour of Clean-up EVERY day and 2 hours normal Volunteer Duty. Morning, Afternoon and Evening cleanings are an hour so pick a shift! When a Volunteer is on Hostel Maintenance Duty under this Schedule they will have to stay around the property for most of that day to ensure that everything remains in clean and in order during their shift. Because a Volunteer’s Cleanup work is spread out through the day, we allow Volunteers to complete another 3 hour shift in between cleanings. This way you can take a day off or enjoy the weekend (Sat & Sun) work free. Please let us know in advance which day you would like off if you choose this option.
