Be a Manager at Hedonisia Hawaii Tropical Farm Retreat!
We are looking for Managers who will enjoy running an environmentally friendly yet affordable eco-hostel. Managers can be single or a couple but must like working with people and the land. This position is ideal for those with previous experience working in the hospitality industry.
Being a Manager at Hedonisia has relatively few hours of actual work per day (2 - 4 hours) and because we are such a small hostel, we cannot pay a high salary for this job.
While the work hours are not long we do prefer that a Manager be on the property to deal with hostel issues as they arise.
And so we prefer a Manager who has an interest, hobby or some activity that makes them want to stay on the property to work on their own projects. The biggest job duty for a Hedonisia Manager is simply being on the property. And so, this position is perfect for artists, writers, computer workers or musicians who will have ample time and space to do their own work on the property whilst managing the hostel and dealing with hostel issues as they arise!
Basic Manager Requirements:
- Respectful, positive and friendly communication skills are required for Guests and Volunteer interactions based on our Principles of Fair-Trade Management.
- Computer skills needed for email maintenance, bookings, and business transactions.
- Potential Managers must be eco-oriented to help maintain an harmonious, energy efficient and environmentally conscious community.
- Drivers License required for supply trips, Airport pickups and Driving Tours.
- This position involves a great deal of trust and responsibility with regards to hostel money, assets and property. To ensure honesty, we usually require a $1000 security deposit from Managers to be returned at the end of the contract. This deposit can be waived if the applicant(s) can submit a recent credit and criminal background check.
- If a Manager does not wish to pay a security deposit then they can also submit a Criminal Background Check. Background checks can easily be done online by services such as People Finder:
A - Assistant Volunteer Manager (Part-time position)
If we already have a Manager or a Manager in training then we are usually open to accepting new volunteers for Assistant Volunteer Manager, which is the first step to becoming a full-time manager. In addition to "normal" volunteer activities an Assistant Manager will learn all aspects of Hostel Management. When the Full-Time Manager goes on vacation the Assistant Manager will take over for that period. And then once the Full-Time Manager returns the Assistant Manager can enjoy the equivalent period as a holiday without any work requirements.
Please note this is NOT a paid position. However, if the Full-Time Manager leaves then the Assistant Manager will have first rights to apply for the position once it is available. Assistant Volunteer Managers are also invited to be part of the Hedonisia Manager's Pool. The Manager's Pool is a list of qualified Assistant Managers who can be contacted and offered a Manager position at Hedonisia in the future once there is availability.
B - Fair-Trade Manager Plan. (Full-time)
This Manager option has the following Benefit plan based on a transparent accounting of hostel expenses:
- $50 Base Stipend a week when acting as Manager.
- Small Optional Bonus Payment based on Net Monthly Hedonisia Profit and how the hostel was Managed.
- Accommodation at Hedonisia Hawaii in one of the huts, either Sunnyside, Avocado, Ohia Breeze, Guava Hut, Love Bus or Pop-Up Camper. (Cash equivalent = $400 a month)
You will not get rich on this job but it offers a great opportunity to learn to operate a small eco-hostel in Hawaii. As well, you will learn to manage Volunteers who will be working on Hedonisia hostel and land projects as well as on our socially activist Internet projects and websites.
Please note that the Fair-Trade Manager Plan requires a 3-month contract and is renewable every 3 months based upon mutual agreement. Manager's who fulfill the terms of their contract and who have done a wonderful job are also invited to join the Hedonisia Manager's pool where they can be invited in the future to manage Hedonisia whenever they are ready to enjoy another stint of living in Hawaii!
