Intern Candidate Week 1: Volunteer Week

During the first week, Candidates complete 5 days of Volunteer work shifts. This initial training period is a process for the Community to get to know the potential Intern and for the Candidate to get to know the Community. During this trial period, Intern Candidates will work the Volunteer Work Week hours, but follow the focus tasks for each shift, broken down in Days 1 - 5 below.

Volunteer Work Week Hours

  • Mondays - Thursdays: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
  • Aloha Fridays: Free!
  • Weekends: Free!


Day 1: Facilities Deep Cleaning

Candidates will watch the following videos that cover the cleaning of the facilities:

  1. Kitchen Cleaning Instructions
  2. Community Food Storage
  3. Laundry & Bathroom Cleaning Instructions
  4. Yoga Barn & Hang-Out Zone Beautification

With guidance from the Intern on Duty, each Candidate will perform the tasks assigned, as shown in the videos. The Intern on Duty will evaluate the Candidate's proficiency and will answer any questions posed.

**By the end of the shift the trainee should know:

  • Hedonisia's recycling and compost practices. Sort through the recycling area ensuring that items are properly sorted and that recyclables are not in the trash can.
  • Show where cleaning products are kept (vinegar, bleach, detergent, dish soap, orange guard, etc.)
  • Which products to use in various areas of the common facilities
  • Where to locate cleaning items and tools (vacuum, broom, rags, etc.)
  • Basic facility cleaning procedures (hangout area, kitchen, yoga barn, desk area, bathroom, laundry, smoking temple, etc.)
  • How to complete the Intern Shift Report.


Day 2: Lodging Prep & Readiness

During the first 15 minutes of the shift, the Candidate should view one of the Lodging Cleaning & Maintenance pages. If there is a check-in scheduled to arrive that day, the Intern Candidate should watch the instruction video related to that lodging.

**By the end of the shift the Trainee should know:

  • How to deep clean any lodging and where all the equipment to do so is located.
  • How to weed the lodging area correctly.
  • How to make up the lodging to Hedo standards.
  • Where to locate each lodging on site, their names, and total capacity.


Day 3: Hedonisia Gardens, Land Work & Tools

Candidates will watch the Land Tools videos during the first 15 minutes of the shift.

  1. Walk-around: The Intern on Duty should bring the Candidate along for a walk-around of the property, so they can learn how to identify areas needing attention and how to create tasks for the day.
  2. Hand weeding: The Intern on Duty should have the Trainee practice hand weeding for beautification; and should show the Trainee where certain plants grow, which plants to keep, and how they behave.
  3. Deep weeding. The Intern on Duty should introduce the Intern Candidate to deep weeding procedures using tools such as a machete, weed whacker, hedge trimmer, kama, and branch loppers, etc. Showing the Trainee where and how to store these tools properly should be a part of this training process.
  4. Cleanup: 15 minutes before the Volunteer Shift is done, the Intern on Duty should allow the Intern Candidate to observe the Volunteers as they clean up their areas and put away their tools.

**By the end of the shift the Candidate should know:

  1. How to identify the sheds and their contents (Locked Shed, Chemical Shed, Tool Shed, Workshop Shed, and power tools)
  2. When mulching needs to be done, and how to mulch with paper bags or cardboard.
  3. How to put away the tools in the correct shed independently after every shift.
  4. How to use more gardening tools: hedge trimmer, shovel, rake, pickaxes, push mower, etc.
  5. Where each tool is located.
  6. Where to locate and identify the gardens they worked on.
  7. Successful maintenance methods for tending the gardens on which they worked (hand weeding, Kama use, which plants to keep, etc.)


Day 4: Shift Prep Assistant (Note: Early start time for trainees)

The Candidate will assist the Intern on Duty with Volunteers during the shift.
  1. Plan the Day: 15 minutes before the beginning of the Volunteer Shift, the Intern on Duty should speak with the Candidate about the day's assignments and the tools needed to accomplish them..
  2. Test Trainee Candidate Knowledge: The Intern of Duty should determine whether the Candidate needs additional training in selecting the proper tools for specific tasks and preparing for a Volunteer Shift. The Trainer could ask the Candidate to identify specific tools. This is a perfect re-enforcement training moment to help Candidates memorize the tool names.
  3. Observe & Evaluate: On shift, the Intern Candidate will work on tasks alongside the Intern on duty. The Trainer will provide direction when needed throughout the Volunteer Shift. 
  4. Rotate: Have the Candidate take the lead.  When necessary, the Interns on Duty will guide and demonstrate communication as they go from one Volunteer assignment to another with the Candidate. This is a mini-intro into the Shadow Shift, so the Trainer should be accessible to the Candidate, but allow the Candidate to assist Volunteers before jumping in. 
  5. Close the Shift: 15 minutes before the end of the shift, the Intern should allow the Candidate to assist Volunteers in closing out their tasks and putting away their tools.
  6. Question and Answer Session: If needed, a more detailed Q&A can be done. Interns can ask Candidates all the review questions to see where they need work.
  7. Extras: In addition, the final Candidate Volunteer Training Shift will include;
    1.  Assessment of the week's work by Interns and Director
    2. Feedback meeting at the end of the week with the Candidate. At Monday's meeting, Interns should discuss the progress and suggest feedback for the Candidate.

**By the end of the shift the Candidate should:

  • Know the right tool for the right job.
  • Know how to interact positively while working with Volunteers.
  • Know how to multi-task on shift while building relationships with others.
  • Know the names of at least 8 tools and how to use them.
  • Know the names of each of the sheds: Valuable Tool Shed, Chemical Shed, Tool Shed, Working Shed.
  • Be able to look at the property and see things to do..." The Intern Eye". 
  • Have suggestions on how to do certain jobs. In other words, the Candidate is showing a genuine interest in what we do and has a desire to learn.
